What's new for midwife renewal

Jan 13, 2021

It’s almost time to renew your midwife registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). For the most part, renewal will look the same as it has in years past. You’ll provide the same information, and deadlines remain unchanged.
  • To enable us to review your application before your current registration expires on March 31, 2021, please complete the online renewal application and pay the full renewal fee by March 1, 2021.
  • You will have until March 31, 2021 at noon to submit required proof of continuing competencies certification or recertification.
That said, there are some things you should know before you renew this year:

Fees

Fees for 2021-22 were announced in October 2020. In addition to a decrease in registration fees, here are some other fee-related changes that may impact your renewal:

No renewal administration fee: The former $50.00 renewal administration fee has been discontinued. You will only pay your 2021-22 registration fees and criminal record check fee (if applicable).

Leaving or returning to practice: The application fee to reinstate your practising registration (formerly called return to practice) is now $230+GST. If you are currently a non-practising midwife registrant and apply for renewal as a practising midwife registrant, this application fee will be charged. The increase in this fee reflects the work required to assess these applications.

If you are a practising midwife registrant and wish to change your registration to non-practising, the application fee will be $100+GST, in addition to all applicable registration fees.

Payment options: A reminder that we no longer accept cash or cheque as methods of payment. View available payment options.

Credit card fee deferred: In October, we told you that we would begin charging a 2.5% fee on all credit card payments starting in January 2020. This fee has been temporarily deferred; you will not be charged this fee when you use a credit card to pay your registration renewal fees.

Unregistered practice surcharge: If you do not renew by the deadline your registration will expire on April 1, 2021 and you will need to apply to reinstate your registration. You cannot work as a midwife until you receive confirmation that BCCNM has granted you registration. If you practice without registration, you will be subject to an additional $325+GST reinstatement surcharge (unregistered practice)

Continuing professional development credits

Practising midwife registrants are typically required to complete a minimum of 45 continuing professional development (CPD) credits per 36-month cycle. In recognition of the challenges for health providers in 2020, any CPD credits accumulated over the past three years will be considered sufficient to meet the terms of the policy. Learn more

Continuing competencies: three-year certification requirement extended

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of in-person courses in 2020, the former College of Midwives of BC amended their continuing competencies policy to require proof of certification or completion every three years in emergency situations. BCCNM has also adopted this requirement.

If you are a practising midwife registrant and completed your CPR, ES, FHS and NRP certifications/courses on or after April 1, 2018, you will meet the registration requirement and be eligible for renewal.

Pre-authorized payment available

BCCNM’s pre-authorized payment program enables you to pay for the following year’s renewal fees over the course of the year, rather than paying a lump sum during the registration renewal period. If you sign up for PAP, you will pay your practising renewal fees in full for 2021-22 as you normally would. Then starting in March 2021, monthly bank withdrawals from your account would begin. By the time you need to renew again, you will have pre-paid most of your BCCNM fees for 2022-23 registration year (barring any fee increases). Learn more about PAP and how to sign up for the program.
