How to renew

Registered midwives in B.C. need to renew their registration annually to ensure they still meet the requirements to practise competently, ethically and safely

​We strongly recommend completing your renewal before Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. 

  • Due to statutory holidays, BCCNM offices will be closed on Friday, March 29 and Monday, April 1, 2024.
  • The online renewal system will stay open until March 31 at 4:30 p.m., but no BCCNM staff will be available to assist you with renewal questions or technical challenges (i.e. passwo​rd resets) from March 29 to April 1, 2024. ​​​​​​

Registration renew​al i​s closed ​

If you did not renew by the deadline, your registration will expire at 11:59 pm on March 31, 2024. To reinstate your registration, complete the Reinstatement Application​ and send it to registermidwives@bccnm.ca​ Until your registration is reinstated, you must not practice as a midwife.​​​​​​​​​​​​

Timelines and deadlines
Renewal open: Feb. 1

Renewal close: March 31 at 4:30 pm.
The renewal application: What to expect
It will take 30-60 minutes to complete your application. You'll be asked to:

  • Indicate what class of registration you are renewing for April 1 (Practising Midwife, Provisional Midwife or Non-practising)
  • Review and/or update your personal information
  • Review and/or update your practice information
  • Review and/or update your hospital privileges
  • Provide information about any criminal charges or convictions over the past year
  • Consent to a criminal record check (if applicable)
  • Meet your quality assurance requirements (including clinical experience and continuing competencies
  • Acknowledge you have read and understand all of the consent and declaration requirements
  • Pay your renewal fee
Fees
Registration renewal fees are set on an annual basis by the BCCNM Board. View fees for registered midwives.
What happens if yo​u don't renew on time
  • If you do not renew by the deadline, your registration will expire. You must not practise as a midwife unless you hold practising registration.
  • To regain your registration status, you will need to apply to reinstate your registration and pay the reinstatement fee​, in addition to paying your registration fees.
  • Unregistered practice: If you practise without practising registration, even accidentally, you are participating in unregistered practice and will be subject to an additional unregistered practice surcharge to reinstate your registration. Learn more about the risks of unregistered practice​.​
Registration renewal reminders   new  
Registration renewal reminders are sent to the email address you submitted to BCCNM, and continue until you complete your renewal or the renewal period ends. Registrants who wish to maintain their BCCNM registration after March 31 cannot opt out of renewal reminders.  ​

How to renew your registration

1. Gather the information you need
  • The email address you provided to BCCNM
  • Your account password
  • The list of hospitals where you hold privileges and/or are applying for privileges
  • Your payment information (see payment options)
2. Complete the renewal application
3. Submit your payment
After completing your application form, you will pay your fees using one of the secure online payment options.
4. Wait for confirmation of registration from BCCNM
  • Once you submit your completed application and pay your renewal fee, BCCNM Registration staff will assess your application to ensure you meet the registration requirements.
  • If your application is approved, you will be sent a confirmation of registration email to the email address on file with BCCNM.
  • Until you receive this email, your renewal application is still in progress and has not been approved.

Haven't received a confirmation email? Your application won't be assessed until you submit your completed application and payment. Before calling to check on the status of your application, please:

  • Double-check that you submitted your application and that your payment went through
  • Check your junk mail and spam folders​
