Frequently asked questions
- Why is professional liability insurance required?
-
Professional liability insurance is required to:
- Can I get my liability insurance from another provider?
-
No, as currently there are no other providers in the province that offer this coverage.
- Am I protected if I forget to renew my registration?
-
No. Only practising registrants are eligible for professional liability insurance. If you practise without protection, you are opening yourself up to personal financial risk if there is a lawsuit stemming from your midwifery practice during that period.
- Do I need commercial general liability insurance as well?
-
Yes. In addition to professional liability insurance, practising midwives are required to carry commercial general liability (CGL) insurance, as set out in the Midwifery Main Agreement. BCCNM does not manage, provide, or advise on CGL coverage.
For information about CGL requirements and coverage options, registrants should contact the
Midwives Association of British Columbia (MABC).
