Student midwife class ending April 1

Mar 9, 2026

As part of the changes to support the implementation of the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA), BCCNM will be discontinuing the student midwife class, effective April 1, 2026. This decision and information about next steps has been shared with impacted registrants.

The HPOA requires that midwifery students practice under the supervision of a practising midwife. To align with this requirement, we’re introducing a new regulatory supervision model, supported by a new practice standard. Student clinical activities will be permitted through regulatory supervision of a practising midwife, rather than student midwife registration.
