13-month registration year for nurses in 2021-22

Sep 23, 2020

When LPNs, NPs, RNs and RPNs renew their registration in January/February 2021, they will renew for 13 months. This additional month of registration will enable the BCCNM nurse registrant renewal period to move to February and March in 2022.

This change will address consistent feedback from nurse registrants that the current renewal period of January/February is not ideal because it immediately follows the busy holiday period. It also aligns the renewal period for BCCNM’s nurse and midwife registrants.

How we will get there

Registration renewal will still take place for all nurse registrants in January and February of 2021, but registrants will renew for 13 months. This means that LPNs, NPs, RNs and RPNs will pay for 13 months of registration, instead of 12. Once renewed, nurse registrant registration will be valid from March 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.

The renewal period for midwives will not be impacted by this change.

We recognize that this extended registration period follows a 14-month registration period for LPNs in 2020-21. We do not anticipate any further changes to the renewal period once the shift to February/March is complete.

Fees

Nurse registrants will pay for the extra month of registration based on a pro-rated daily rate. BCCNM registration fees have not yet been approved for 2021-22; they will be announced in October.

Answers for nurse registrants

Is my current registration expiry changing?

No. Your current registration will expire on February 28, 2021. You will need to renew your registration in order to continue working on or after March 1, 2021.

Will I pay more this year?

Yes. Nurse registrants will pay for an extra month of registration based on a pro-rated daily rate. However, the exact amount is not know as the 2021-22 fees have not yet been approved by the BCCNM Board.

Do I have to tell my employer about these changes?

You are not obligated to, but you may wish to inform your employer as a courtesy. After you renew, your new expiry date of March 31, 2022 will show on the Nurse Verification tool. It is your employer's responsibility to verify that their nurse employees hold practising registration. It is your responsibility to ensure you only practise when you are authorized to do so.
