Effective Jan. 26, 2023, midwives registered with BCCNM who meet the standards, limits, and conditions for prescribing controlled drugs and substances can order controlled prescription pads under B.C.'s Controlled Prescription Program. The program administers the duplicate prescription pads required to prescribe specific controlled drugs and substances in the community and aims to reduce inappropriate prescribing and prevent forgeries.
Midwives are reminded to ensure their employer information in their online BCCNM profile is current because it will be printed on the prescription pads and cross-checked against employment records.
Midwives prescribing controlled drugs and substances must also secure access to PharmaNet. Questions about the Controlled Prescription Program should be directed to cpp@bccnm.ca.
New midwife medications and substances standard
A reminder that a new Medications and Substances: Standards, Limits and Conditions standard comes into effect March 1, 2023.
New prescribing resources for controlled drugs and substances
We have created a new resource centre for midwife prescribing of controlled drugs and substances. Take a look around, and feel free to drop us a line if you have ideas or suggestions. We will be updating this page regularly with learning resources and answers to questions we receive from midwives.
