BCCNM: what you need to know

Sep 1, 2020

On Sept. 1, 2020, the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) began regulating all nurses and midwives in B.C. The previous entities—BCCNP and CMBC—have been amalgamated into a single entity.

The new BCCMN website will be launched later in Fall 2020. Until then, the legacy websites of both colleges will continue. We appreciate your patience as we work to get documents and standards updated with new information and branding.

A few things to note:

  • Registration status: All nurses' and midwives' current registration have been automatically transferred to BCCNM.
  • Nurse verificationVerification of nurses' registration status remains publicly available.
  • Midwife verification: Verification of midwives' registration status.
  • Professional designations: The unique designations for nursing (LPN, NP, RN and RPN) and midwifery (RM) remain in place and will not change.
  • Standards of Practice and Scope of Practice: Professional Standards, Practice Standards and Scope of Practice Standards for each of the four nursing designations have not changed. Midwifery standards also remain the same.
  • Application, registration and renewal requirements: Requirements remain the same. More information about registration renewal fees for each designation will be shared in the fall.
  • Fees: Fees will not be changing for Sep. 1–Dec. 31, 2020. Registration renewal fees for 2021 will be announced later this year.
  • Quality Assurance: Nurses must continue to meet their QA requirements.
  • Current Recognition Status of Nursing Education Programs and Standards for Program Recognition: existing program recognition carries over to BCCNM, as do the standards.
  • Complaints investigationsAll open investigations have been transferred to BCCNM. No changes will be made to how complaints are investigated.
  • Practice consultation: Practice consultation for each of the four nursing designations, and midwifery continues to be available.
  • Contacting us: All legacy email addresses will be automatically forwarded to the new college.
