A student midwife registrant may only provide midwifery services in connection with fulfilling the conditions and requirements of the recognized midwifery education program in which the student is enrolled.

Recognized programs

​If you are currently enrolled as a student in a BCCNM-recognized midwifery education program you are eligible for student midwife registration. ​A student midwife's registration will be cancelled if the student ceases to be enrolled in a BCCNM-recognized midwifery education program.

UBC Midwifery Program or Internationally Educated Midwifery Bridging Progr​am

Students of the Midwifery Program (MEP) or participants of the Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP) at the University of British Columbia must be registered with BCCNM as student midwife registrants for the duration of the program.

Other BCCNM-recognized midwifery education progra​ms

Students from other BCCNM-recognized midwifery education programs intending to do clinical placements in B.C. must seek student midwife registration with BCCNM prior to the commencement of the clinical placements.​​

Application an​​d Process​

Instructions on how a student currently enrolled in a BCCNM-recognized midwifery education program can seek student midwife registration are provided below. BCCNM recommends submitting applications for registration a minimum of 4-6 weeks in advance of your anticipated registration date. If you believe your application may be considered complex, you may wish to submit your application earlier.

​​1. Prepare your documents
To avoid delays in processing your application, prepare the following documents before you start​:

  • Proof of midwifery program enrollment
  • Notarized copies of two pieces of identification including proof of authorization to reside and work in Canada
  • A letter of standing and professional conduct/verification of registration from any regulator with which you have held or currently hold registration. This must be received by BCCNM directly from the regulator.​​​

2. Apply to BCCNM
Submit the form and all required supporting documentation to BCCNM Registration Services by:

Pay the application fee of $175+GST. Instruction for online payment will be provided once your application is received.
4. Criminal record check
Consent to a criminal record check. Instructions on how to request and consent to a criminal record check in Canada and/or other applicable jurisdictions will be provided once application is reviewed.
5. Pay registration fee
Pay your registration fee​. Instructions on online payment by credit card and the amount required will be provided once application is approved.
