From August to September 2024, BCCNM surveyed LPNs, RNs, and RPNs for their input on:
- Proposed standards for when nurses perform advanced activities, and
- Their knowledge of scope of practice.
Thank you to all 764 nurses who participated and took the time to provide feedback. Input from registrants is a key element in BCCNM's development of standards and learning resources.
What we heard
- Most LPNs, RNs, and RPNs found that: the proposed standards on advanced activities are clear and easy to understand; they could apply the standards in their nursing practice; and the standards will support nurses to provide safe care.
- There are varying degrees of confidence in nurses' understanding of scope of practice concepts.
- The proposed standards are applicable to all activities nurses perform, not just advanced activities.
- Clinical experience (in addition to education) is an important way nurses obtain and maintain the necessary competence to safely perform advanced activities.
- Workplace policies, processes, and other resources need to be in place and current to support nurses to perform advanced activities safely and competently.
What happens next?
Registrant feedback from the surveys is being considered as standards are being finalized and presented to the BCCNM board for approval. Responses will also support developing learning resources to help nurses better understand their scope of practice.
We thank nurses again for taking the time to complete these surveys.
